Retired N.Y. State Police Investigator Dies of 9/11-Related Illness

"He devoted his life to protecting the community and his commitment to the New York State Police will always be remembered," the agency said of retired Senior Investigator John L. Carey.

A former New York State Police investigator who was with the agency for over three decades died last month from an illness stemming from his work in and around the World Trade Center site following the Sept. 11 attacks.

Senior Investigator John L. Carey died Oct. 24, the agency stated in an online update. He had served with the department for 32 years, retiring in July 2014.

Carey, who was last assigned to Troop G, Forensic Investigation Unit, had been assigned to work at ground zero after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center towers. A funeral service was Saturday.

"He devoted his life to protecting the community and his commitment to the New York State Police will always be remembered," the agency stated.
